What is the NAATI CCL Test?

The NAATI Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test assesses your ability to interpret between English and another language in community settings. Passing the test earns you 5 bonus points towards your Australian Permanent Residency application — and it is among the cheapest, fastest ways to add points to a skilled-migration application.

The test consists of two dialogues covering real-world scenarios like medical consultations, government services, and legal matters. Each dialogue is scored out of 45 marks, and you need a combined score of 63 out of 90 to pass.

Scoring uses a deductive system. Each dialogue starts at 45 marks and loses points for omissions, additions, and distortions of meaning. Minor grammar slips and accent are not penalised as long as the meaning stays intact. You need at least 29 of 45 on each dialogue and 63 overall — a strong performance on one cannot fully rescue a weak one, so consistency across both dialogues matters more than peaks.

Practising with a textbook can teach you vocabulary, but it cannot tell you how you sound under timed pressure or where your interpretation actually drifts. Lingo Copilot CCL records your response to each 35-word segment, compares it against a model interpretation, and flags the specific omissions and additions that would lose you marks on the real test. Because the dialogue library keeps growing, practice keeps surfacing new gaps instead of letting you memorise a fixed set of answers.

What a NAATI CCL practice dialogue looks like

A Hindi-English GP scenario from our practice library — one of hundreds you can run through with instant AI scoring on the error categories NAATI marking is built on.

Scenario: GP Visit — Persistent Headaches

A woman has been experiencing persistent headaches for several weeks and visits a GP clinic for medical advice. You hear each ~35-word segment and interpret it into the other language before the next segment plays.

DoctorEnglish → Hindi

“Good morning. I can see from your file that you’ve been experiencing headaches for the past two weeks. Can you describe the pain for me?”

सुप्रभात। आपकी फ़ाइल से पता चलता है कि पिछले दो हफ़्तों से आपको सिरदर्द हो रहा है। क्या आप मुझे दर्द के बारे में बता सकते हैं?

PatientHindi → English

“Yes, doctor. The pain is mostly on the right side of my head. It starts in the morning and gets worse throughout the day. Sometimes I also feel dizzy.”

DoctorEnglish → Hindi

“I see. Have you noticed any changes in your vision, or do you feel nauseous when the headaches are severe?”

समझा। क्या आपने अपनी दृष्टि में कोई बदलाव देखा है, या जब सिरदर्द तेज़ होता है तो क्या आपको मतली होती है?

The real test runs about 20 minutes across two such dialogues. Lingo Copilot CCL records your interpretation segment by segment, compares it against a model translation, and flags the omissions, additions, and meaning-distortions that would lose marks on the live NAATI test.

What is the NAATI CCL test?
The NAATI Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test assesses your ability to interpret between English and a language other than English (LOTE) in a community setting. It consists of two recorded dialogues that simulate real-life conversations in areas like health, legal, immigration, and social services. Passing the test earns you 5 bonus points on the skilled migration points test, helping you qualify for Australian Permanent Residency.
How is the NAATI CCL test scored?
The test uses a deductive marking system. Each dialogue is worth 45 marks (90 total). You need at least 29 marks per dialogue and a combined score of 63 or more to pass. Marks are deducted for omissions, additions, distortions of meaning, and significant hesitations. Maintaining accuracy and completeness is more important than perfect grammar.
Which languages are available on Lingo Copilot CCL?
We currently support 26 languages: Japanese, Mandarin, Hindi, Korean, Vietnamese, Nepali, Spanish, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Urdu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Arabic, Kannada, Sinhala, Filipino, Bengali, Cantonese, Portuguese, Turkish, Persian, Indonesian, Marathi, Thai, and Swahili. Each language includes practice dialogues covering all ten NAATI CCL topic domains, with AI-powered scoring and detailed feedback on your interpreting performance.
How accurate is the AI scoring compared to the real NAATI test?
The AI evaluates your responses for omissions, additions and distortions — the error categories NAATI's deductive marking is built on. It cannot replicate official scoring (only NAATI's human examiners mark the real test), but it gives consistent, specific feedback on where you lose marks, which is what moves your score.
How many practice tests do I need before the real exam?
There's no magic number — it depends on your starting level in both languages. Candidates commonly prepare over four to eight weeks. A useful benchmark: practise until you consistently score above 70 out of 90 on full sessions, which leaves a margin above the 63-mark pass line.
What topics are covered in the NAATI CCL test?
NAATI lists twelve subject areas its dialogues draw from: business, consumer affairs, employment, health, immigration and settlement, legal, community, education, financial, housing, insurance, and social services. Our practice library groups these everyday scenarios into ten domains — health, legal, immigration, education, community, employment, insurance, consumer affairs, housing and finance — so you can build vocabulary and confidence across all of them.
How much does Lingo Copilot CCL cost?
We offer a free trial so you can experience our AI-powered practice sessions before committing. Our paid plans provide unlimited access to all practice dialogues, detailed scoring analytics, and progress tracking. Visit our pricing page for current plan details and pricing.
Can I use Lingo Copilot CCL on my phone?
Yes — Lingo Copilot CCL works on any device with a modern browser and microphone access: desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. Practise in a quiet room. One tip: the real CCL test doesn't allow headsets — you must use your computer's built-in microphone and speakers — so do at least some of your practice that way.
How does the practice test work?
Each practice session simulates a real NAATI CCL test. You listen to a recorded dialogue segment, then record your interpretation into the other language. Our AI instantly evaluates your response for accuracy, completeness, and fluency, providing a detailed score breakdown and specific feedback on areas to improve. You can replay segments and retake tests as many times as you need.
What are the 5 bonus points from the CCL test?
The Australian Department of Home Affairs awards 5 bonus points on the skilled migration points test (used for visa subclasses 189, 190, and 491) if you pass the NAATI CCL test. Those 5 points can lift your Expression of Interest (EOI) ranking enough to cut months off the wait for an invitation. For a bilingual applicant, it's among the easiest 5 points to add toward Permanent Residency.
