One English 'you', several Kannada choices
English 'you' carries no level of respect; Kannada makes you pick one each time. Informal nīnu (ನೀನು) fits a child or a close friend, while the respectful nīvu (ನೀವು), the plural used for one person, is what a solicitor or a GP gets. Politeness runs past the pronoun: the honorific śrī (ಶ್ರೀ) before a man's name, the suffix avare (ಅವರೆ) after it, avaru (ಅವರು) for an elder, and the borrowed sar (ಸರ್) and maḍam (ಮಡಂ) in formal settings. The marking weighs register, so pick a level and hold it.
Holding the verb to the end
Kannada puts the verb last. English keeps it in the middle, so a long sentence must be turned around before it sounds right in Kannada. Track English word by word and the output comes out stiff. Jot a few keywords, hold the idea, then rebuild it in Kannada order once the speaker stops.
The -u reflex on English words
Slipping English nouns into a Kannada sentence is ordinary Bengaluru speech, sometimes with a tidy -u added: 'car-u', 'office-u'. Going into Kannada, the exam wants the meaning carried in Kannada rather than the English word handed back. Under pressure the habit gets stronger. Lakh, crore and the Western millions
Indian numbering groups large figures as lakṣa (ಲಕ್ಷ), the lakh of 100,000, and kōṭi (ಕೋಟಿ), the crore of ten million, while a Centrelink or insurance segment runs in thousands and millions. Five lakh is five hundred thousand. One crore is ten million. Group the digits wrong and you have changed the figure, and a changed number counts against you. Drill the conversion until it stops needing thought.
Which Kannada counts as correct
There is no single regional Kannada you must match. The language is strongly diglossic, a literary register for news and government above everyday spoken Kannada, and the varieties of Mysore, Dharwad and the Mangalore-Kundapura coast differ in sound and phrasing. The test assesses everyday community language, so the target is clear, standard spoken Kannada that a general community member follows. The high literary form is not expected, and a regional background costs you nothing.
Recognition is easy. Producing the formal vocabulary at speed is the part that wobbles. Words for a guardianship order, a bond refund or a medication interaction sit in English in daily life, and their Kannada equivalents need building first. Kinship terms double as respect markers, so aṇṇa (ಅಣ್ಣ) and akka (ಅಕ್ಕ) shift weight with who is speaking to whom.
