What is the NAATI CCL Test?

The NAATI Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test is an interpreting assessment administered by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. It evaluates your ability to convey the meaning of a conversation between an English speaker and a speaker of a Language Other Than English (LOTE) in a community context.

Unlike NAATI's professional interpreting certifications, the CCL test is specifically designed for individuals seeking to demonstrate community-level language ability. It is widely used by skilled migration applicants to earn 5 bonus points on the Australian points test.

The information on this page is accurate as of March 2026. NAATI may update test format, fees, and policies at any time. Please check the official NAATI website for the latest details.

Test Format

The test consists of two recorded dialogues, each approximately 300 words in length. Each dialogue simulates a real-world conversation and is divided into segments of roughly 35 words.

You listen to each segment and then interpret it into the other language. Segments alternate between English-to-LOTE and LOTE-to-English directions. The test performance must be completed within 20 minutes, though the full session including setup takes approximately one hour.

Scoring System

The NAATI CCL uses a deductive marking system. You start with the maximum score and marks are deducted for errors. The four main types of errors are:

Omissions

Leaving out information from the original segment

Additions

Adding information not present in the original

Distortions

Changing or altering the meaning of the message

Hesitations

Excessive pauses, false starts, or self-corrections

5 Bonus Points for Australian PR

Passing the NAATI CCL test earns you 5 bonus points on the points test used for Australian skilled migration visas (subclasses 189, 190, and 491). These points are claimed under the "community language" category.

In the competitive points-based system, 5 extra points can move your Expression of Interest (EOI) ranking up a tier and cut the wait for an invitation. For a bilingual applicant, the CCL is among the cheapest, fastest ways to add points toward PR.

To claim the points, you simply include your NAATI CCL result when submitting or updating your EOI in SkillSelect. The result must be valid (within 5 years) at the time of visa application.

Visa point allocations and subclass eligibility are as of March 2026. Immigration policy changes frequently — check the Department of Home Affairs website for current requirements.

How the AI scoring works

When you interpret a segment, our evaluator compares your response against a model interpretation of that segment and scores how accurately you conveyed the meaning— not whether you matched specific words. Each dialogue is worth 45 marks, and every ~35-word segment carries a share of those marks proportional to its length. The evaluator checks for the same error types NAATI's deductive rubric uses: omissions (meaning you left out), additions (meaning you invented), and distortions (meaning you shifted), plus grammar, register, and hesitation. Minor slips cost fractional marks; losing critical content costs more.

The scoring is language-aware. Synonyms and natural paraphrasing are not penalised, and for pro-drop languages like Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese, a naturally dropped subject or pronoun is not treated as an omission. This is a practice aid, not the real assessment: our scoring is calibrated to mirror how NAATI marks, but the actual test is judged by NAATI's human examiners. Treat your practice scores as a guide to where your interpretation drifts, not a prediction of your official result.

What we don't do

We don't offer coaching or tutoring, we don't book your test for you, and we don't guarantee a pass — no honest practice tool can, because the result depends on your performance on the day and NAATI's assessment. We also don't sell PR points: the CCL credential earns them, and we only help you prepare for the CCL.

How we keep this current

NAATI periodically revises the test format, fees, and policies. We track changes against naati.com.au and update our cornerstone guides accordingly; each guide carries a visible date so you can judge how current it is. If you spot something out of date, tell us through the contact form and we'll check it against the official source.
